A few weeks ago we were on an island…

Here is a post I wrote a while ago, but since I’m still trying to do everything in order, have just now gotten to. =(

Its all about an island called Caye Caulker.

After the unevenful bus ride to Belize city we found a taxi and reached the water taxi in less than five minutes. And ten minutes later we were speeding away on a boat filled with travelers headed to the small island of Caye Caulker.

And it really is small. Every either rides bikes or has a golf cart. And its mostly bikes. We’ve seen few actual vehicals, and they were the police trucks. The island itself isn’t too small, about 5 miles long or so. I believe its actually around the same size as Isla Mujeres, in Mexico. But the villiage is small.

Our first hotel wasn’t that amazing. Like most places here, if you want to stay cool you have to pay almost double for AC. So we stick to normal cheap fan cooled rooms…which isn’t that cold.

We went swimming the first day we got here and have been almost every day since we arrived. The water is amazing, as it is everywhere down here. Very clear and very blue.

The people are so nice too. Most of the people on the island are tourists, and they are mainly doing their own thing. But if you take the time to chat with the locals it makes the whole expierence that much more amazing.

For instances, Jolly Roger. We are used to walking down the street and being asked to come look in stores and eat there or sleep there from out time in Mexico. It isn’t that bad in Belize, but a few people will still try and presuade you to buy their stuff when its slow. Almost every time we walked by this tiny place with two picnic tables, we were asked when we were coming to eat there by this big man named Roger.

One night he happened to catch us when we were going out to find food. We asked if it was cheap (again, not a lot of money) and he said 20 Belize (10 US) would get us 3 lobster tails, mashed potaoes, rice, garlic bread, and two rum punches, and we could share everything. So, of course, we said yes.

What a good desicion. The food was hands down the best I’ve had in a long time. Best lobster for sure. And Jolly Roger was the best. He pulled out a cell phone and asked us for a phone number, because he was going to call someone we knew. So Chris gave his moms number, but no answer. Then he gave his sister, Caseys, number and bingo. He introduced himself as calling from Belize and that Chris was at the world famous Jolly Rogers. This guy was so nice. We ended up giving him our two bottles of rum from the tour, since we can’t take them to Liberty (where we are going to volunteer next).

We also went snorkeling! No, we didn’t go on a tour which everyone tells us we have to. But we have plenty have time to do that since we will be right outsie Belize city.

Anyway, we are on to volunteer next. Which means we will have 3 meals a day, a place to sleep and do laundry, and we will be able to save up some money.
