Andvntures in Orange Walk, Belize
Posted by Jamie Orman on December 13th, 2009Seriously, Chinese restaurants are everywhere. Which is probably why this place is named Orange Walk.
Anyway, its a nice enough town but not a whole lot to do here. Granted, we were only here one day, but I think it wouldn’t be a place to stay more than two or thee days.
We got in way early. It was around 8 or 9. When we got off the bus our friend George was waiting (remember him from the previous post? He went with us to Shipstern. He has a few boats and has been giving us tips on sailing). We followed him to a good hotel that was way cheap too. Once we settled in we found out Liz and Andre were also staying at the same hotel. They told us about a Rum tour they went on the day before, so Chris, George, and I decided to head on out to that later.
And that is exactly what we did. Apparently this distillery is one of the largest, if not the largest, one in the country. They don’t export their rum either, only sold in Belize. Well, they are also closed. They ran out of molasses apparently. When we got there we went into the AC office where about five people were just sitting around. They told us it was closed since they ran out but would give us free samples.
Lets see. The ’samples’ were given to each of us. George got the dark rum, Chris the light, and I got the coconut flavored. Oh yeah, did I mention these samples were regular large bottles of rum? Haha (actually Chris and I just gave our two bottles to Jolly Roger here in Caye Caulker, since we can’t have alcohol where we are volunteering at).
After that we and the best BBQ ever, It was like, 7 USD for two meals that we got at the park and took back to the hotel. It was SO good. I even took pictures. =]
The next day we jumped on the bus and were on our way to Belize City, where we planned to catch the boat into Caye Caulker.
